CALLING FOXES

There are a two main reasons why an electronic caller can be more effective than using a mouth call – or using the back of your hand.

First of all, the sounds available for an electronic caller are far more wide-ranging than can be achieved by using manual calls. For example, the sound of a distressed chicken, or a new-born lamb – or the notorious Vixen in Heat are all available for electronic calls – but are far harder to replicate manually.

Second, foxes will often approach a call from downwind – which means if you are calling manually, your quarry is likely to scent you long before it’s in a safe shooting position. Placing an electronic caller across the wind from you means you are far less likely to spook the fox because of your scent.

Foxes learn very quickly – and as well as becoming lamp shy, they can become call shy. If a fox responds to a call and comes into the caller and then has a bad experience then it is likely to associate that call with the bad experience. So shoot safe and straight – and don’t give them the opportunity to learn.
Mimicking the distress cries of a wounded or dying rodent, the Stainless Steel Best Fox Caller is not only great for calling foxes from long range in the open countryside it can also be used for the quieter, close-up work.
In fact, mouth-blown rabbit distress calls are probably accountable for more dead foxes than any other type of caller – and The Best Fox Caller SS is surely the best of its type on the market today.
As with any type of calling, the aim is to sound natural. There are no hard and fast rules – and different calls require different durations. A lone lamb – or distressed chicken could naturally call for 20-30 minutes – whereas the sound of a rabbit being killed would only naturally occur for a minute or so. So the key here is think natural – understand what call you are using and what the fox would expect to hear.

ICOTEC TECHNICAL QUESTIONS

1: Remote Battery:  The GC300, and GC350 callers utilize an A23 12volt battery. There is a possibility the battery could be low or dead. If the LED power indicator light on the remote is not lighting up when a call button is pressed and held, or if the light flashes, that means the battery is low and needs replacing. An A23 battery is available at many retail stores that carry a selection of batteries. A23 batteries are commonly used in garage door openers.

2: Battery Instillation: Check and make sure the AA batteries installed in the speaker unit are new and properly installed. A single backwards battery still pushes enough current to light the power indicator light on the unit but not enough to power the amplifier. Because rechargeable batteries are not frequently replaced and reduce power capacity over time, we recommend simple AA 1.5 volt batteries in your ICOtec equipment, they are affordable and our battery consumption rate is very conservative.

3: Pairing Remote to Unit: The GC300 and GC350 remote and unit leave the factory paired for communication, however it is possible that pairing could be interrupted. Turn the base unit power on, with a paper clip, depress the pairing button, located in the tiny hole beside the on/off switch, while depressing and holding in on button press and hold a call button on the remote simultaneously for approximately 5 seconds. Once the communication is re-established you will hear a call from the speaker.

4: Checking the Speaker:  All power indicator lights are working properly but you still have no sound, with the models GC300, plug a set of ear buds or headphones into the external speaker port to check for sound coming through them, DO NOT PLACE HEADPHONES OR EAR BUDS IN YOUR EARS WHILE TESTING FOR SOUND, THE SOUND IS VERY LOUD AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO YOUR HEARING, if you hear sound through the external port, the main speaker is potentially the issue and you will need to contact us via our CONTACT FORM  With the GC350 and 500 make sure power is off, remove the SD card and turn power on, the caller should speak to you telling you to “Please insert SD card”, if the caller does not, then main speaker is potentially the issue. Please fill in a CONTACT FORM and get in touch with us. We will either email you or call you to discuss the problem. Please do not send the ICOtec back to us WITHOUT contacting us first as often it can be fixed over the telephone.

5: SD Card: If you have tested for the batteries and the speaker and are still not getting calls through your GC350 or GC500, the next step is to determine if the SD card is working properly. Using a Microsoft based PC ONLY, DO NOT USE A MAC COMPUTER, you will need plug the unit into the computer with the provided USB cable to access the files on the SD card. Once you find the drive that has the ICOtec sound files, copy and paste the files into an empty backup folder on your desktop, you will need to access them again later, be sure this step is completed prior to reformatting the SD card. Next, you’ll need to format the SD card to erase any possible errors. Be sure to format the card to FAT or FAT32 format and copy/paste the sound files back on to the main root of the SD card. Files can’t be placed into a folder on the SD card, they will not play. With the GC500 the remote will need to be updated via the supplied synchronization cable (3.5mm double male ends).

ICOtec has an extensive “ALWAYS FREE” library of calls for its callers.

If none of those suggestions work then please complete the CONTACT FORM here, selecting “Technical Support” under the “What is the Nature of your Enquiry” section. Please tell us when and where you bought the caller, what model it is – and a brief description of the problem you are experiencing. We will either email you or call you to discuss the problem. Please do not send the ICOtec back to us WITHOUT contacting us first as often it can be fixed over the telephone.

  1. Insert batteries in the caller and remote.
  2. Switch the caller and remote on.
  3. Insert one end of the SYNC cable into the port of your caller.
  4. Insert the other end of the SYNC cable in to the port on the left side of the remote. After a couple of seconds the screen will show “Updating Sounds”- and above this, you will see the display scroll through the calls that are being added to the remote. Once all calls are added, the display will flash “OK” 10 times-and then return to your (now updated) call list.
  5. Switch everything off- and unplug the cable.
  6. Power the remote and base unit back up- and your remote and base unit should now be synced with each other.
For the GC500, you need a 9v PP3 – available online or at most retailers.
For the GC300 and GC350, you’ll need a 12v MN21 Battery. These are available at most large supermarkets – but you can also purchase here
Due to the restrictions sending batteries, none of our remote callers are shipped with batteries.
As a guide, you will need the following:
GC300: Caller – 4 x AA, Remote – 1 x MN21
GC350: Caller – 4 x AA, Remote – 1 x MN21
GC500: Caller – 4 x AA, Remote – 1 x PP3
Night Stalker: Caller – 10 x AA, Remote – 4 x AA
Outlaw: Caller – 10 x AA, Remote – 4 x AA

On the left hand side of your GC350 remote is an ON/OFF switch. This switch ONLY controls the backlight so should be kept in the OFF position unless you require the backlight. Leaving the switch in the ON position will flatten your battery very quickly. The remote will function whether this switch is in the ON or OFF position.

OTHER PRODUCTS

Quad sticks are extremely steady, robust, height adjustable, lightweight and quick to use.

You know we wouldn’t try and sell you something that didn’t give you a real advantage over Charlie – these certainly do… We’ve used bipod sticks in the past and whilst they provide a steadier shot than “off hand” they still require a lot of practice. We’ve asked a number of people to try these sticks and without exception, they have been amazed at just how steady they are…
